San Matías Añejo Tequila

Every so often you unexpectedly come across a real winner… this is one of ‘em.A couple of months ago my brother-in-law dropped off a 750 of San Matias that he picked up south of the border for an unbelievably low price. I threw it in the freezer for awhile, and just now poured meeself a cognac snifter full… and I have to say, This Jalisco-bred stuff is out-stand-ing. Serously out-fucking-standing.

You catch your first whiff of oak on this joy juice about halfway through your 2-ouce curl, before the glass has gotten to your lips. It’s not overpowering, but it’s very distinct. Definitely up front in the mix. But there’s no harshness; it actually glides across the tongue and down the gullet like spiked vanilla ice cream. It’s definitely not an agave-snob’s ball of wax, but the agave is there too– it’s just that this stuff is very balanced. The oak (female), the agave (female), and the alcohol (manly)… it’s like they’re all in the ideal 3-way daisy chain, sucking one-another off in perfect unison, with no mess and no strings attached.

OK, so I got off on a bit of a tangent…

Seriously though, I’d put this stuff up on high with Corzo Reposado and Cuervo Reserva de la Familia. A notch above the top-shelf standby Don Julio, but in the same realm stylistically. The kind of tequila you can’t just have one glass of… which is probably why this review is so short and simplistic and, most likely, full of spelling and punctuation mistakes.

I’m gonna give this stuff 105 out of 100 points. Would have been a straight 100-Even, since it’s pretty much the perfect tequila, but I gave it 5 bonus points for making me think about sex.
