MacTarnahan’s Blackwatch Cream Porter

Sampled this porter tonight after downing a few other big IPA’s, a change-up to the status quo of big hopped beers as of late. With the cold weather upon us, and the new chimenea burning, it was the perfect time to give this one a go.

Upon first glance this beer is a dark chocolate color, and pours with a moderately small head, with little carbonation. The label on the 12 oz. bottle advertises this as a “cream ale” although the cream honestly doesn’t live up to the hype, and is overwhelmed by a roasted/burnt toffee taste. Think espresso meets chocolate cream pie. I expected this beer to be thick, almost chewable; I was let down, as it turned out to be thin and watery. The beer finishes with what could be described as a lingering acidity. It really lacks a good balance.

If you are in the market for a nice porter, I would suggest looking for Stone Brewing Company’s Smoked Porter, either the regular or the “vanilla bean.” This is what most knowledgeable beer lovers would consider to be the top of the class as far as porters go. Any comments from cyberspace on good porters worth trying this winter season?

Score:

This gets an official BoozeReviews Score of 50/100 solely because everything is lacking in this beer: flavor, texture, and finish. On another note, I managed to make it through a whole review without any sophomoric humor! Kind of reminds me of the time that I wrestled with my dog for so long that I came. But that story will be told shortly in my review of Jagermeister…

uh, PETA is going to love that one. Is it animal cruelty when you accidentally spill a little man sauce on the poor beast?

Jon, you of all people should know that animal cruelty only happens when they’re asleep…
